On-farm experience
This year's crop (2007) is looking 'truly amazing' following the prolonged period of gloomy weather throughout June and July, according to Philip Skinner, of Pilgrims Farm in Surrey. We're growing what is amounting to such a large volume crop," he says. "NK Bull is standing at over seven feet, there are plenty of cobs, and despite maturity being around three weeks later than usual, we expect the crop will achieve our target of 20t/acre fresh weight."
Philip, who is among the first farmers to plant NK Bull, explained: "We are continually looking out for the latest high yielding varieties on the Descriptive List. NK Bull's figures looked sufficiently interesting in terms of meeting our selection criteria for both quantity and quality, that we decided to commit 45 acres, half the total area grown. Furthermore, NK Bull has a NIAB rating of 6 for maturity, and I am among those happy to let the crop maximise the number of potential sunlight hours and harvest in early October."
Maize has been an integral part of the herd diet for more than 30 years for the Skinners who run a 130 cow commercial herd averaging close to 8,000 litres. "We are focused on maximising yield from home-grown forages, and maize is included at a rate of 55% of forage diet's total DM," he said. "With escalating cereal prices, we plan to drop caustic treated wheat from the diet and increase maize's inclusion by growing an additional 40 acres of NK Bull."
